1. preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper
2. cream the softened butter with brown sugar and granulated sugar until light and fluffy
3. beat in eggs one at a time then stir in peppermint and vanilla extracts
4. whisk together flour cocoa powder baking soda and salt in a separate bowl
5. gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture and mix until combined
6. fold in chocolate chips and half of the crushed candy canes
7. chill the dough in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes
8. scoop tablespoon-sized balls of dough onto prepared baking sheets spacing them 2 inches apart
9. bake for 9 to 11 minutes until edges are set but centers remain soft
10. immediately press mini marshmallows or extra candy cane pieces onto warm cookies then cool completely on a wire rack
