1. Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium heat and brown the ground beef, seasoning with salt and pepper and draining excess fat if necessary.
2. Add onion and cook until translucent, then stir in garlic, italian seasoning, basil, and red pepper flakes.
3. Pour in beef broth, marinara sauce, and crushed tomatoes and bring to a gentle simmer for 10 minutes.
4. Add broken lasagna noodles and cook until tender, about 10 to 12 minutes, stirring occasionally.
5. Turn off heat and stir in mozzarella and parmesan until melted, then top with ricotta if using and garnish with fresh basil or parsley.
